Location and Activities
Long before the Golden Gate Bridge connected city-dwellers to Marin County, determined beach-lovers traveled by ferry to the foot of Mount Tamalpais, rode a train up to the peak, and trekked down through redwood forests and long grass in order to enjoy the wide white sands of the shoreline now known as Stinson Beach. The sheltered little town that emerged to entertain and feed visitors first came into existence in the late nineteenth century as “Willow Camp.” As the ease of transportation increased in the early 20th century, word spread about the beauties of this area that looked up at the foothills of Mount Tamalpais and out across the Pacific. Luckily, first Marin County in 1939 and then the National Park Service in 1950 recognized the need to protect this natural gem, and the three-mile beach and much of the surrounding area have been preserved as public space ever since. Stinson Beach is only 20 miles from San Francisco, but you get access to a small town hidden from most of the world by Mount Tamalpais and the wild ride along Highway One.
Today you can hike down into Stinson like tourists did for decades, or you can drive into town and park right at the beach!Stinson Beach is a gorgeous stretch of sand where you can enjoy hours of surfing, swimming, and sunbathing. Our quirky little beach town also has that great vibe that comes from being a vacation spot people have loved for generations. It has kept its out-of-the-way charm while also carefully improving amenities for visitors. You can plan to hang out all weekend by renting a cottage or house right on the beach from one of our local realtors, including Highway One Properties and Oceanic Realty. When you get hungry, just stroll into town! The Stinson Beach Breakers Café is smack in the center of everything. To either side of Breakers Café on the tiny main street of Stinson are locally-owned shops where you can find cool new surf gear to ride the local waves or buy a book to read over coffee at the Café. After spending time at the beach, ramble around town or hike up into the surrounding natural beauty of the Mount Tamalpais State Park.
Venue Details
Breakers Café is the only restaurant in town that is available for private parties any night of the week, and with a full kitchen and trained staff on site, all the details of catering can be arranged with ease. The Café offers inside seating, as well as a large wooden deck and a spacious beer garden. The interior space alone can seat up to sixty people. The deck and the restaurant together can accommodate 100 people (130 standing). If the beer garden is also included, Breakers Café can host a party of up to 200 people. Breakers is fully wheelchair accessible. We are also licensed to offer amplified music throughout the restaurant.
Breakers Café offers Classic American food with a Latin twist, and we have creative menus available for different price points. We source as many of our ingredients as possible from local farmers and from our own kitchen garden, and we have been certified by Marin Organic for our farm-to-table commitment. The venue is also available without food service, should you wish to bring in your own caterer. The Café has a full bar license, beer on tap, and trained bartenders who happen to make the best Bloody Mary in Marin.
Inside the restaurant, the décor is casual beach chic, with all the warm touches that Northern California offers. Our bar was built of locally-milled and hewn wood, and thelocal tongue and groove red fir floor is original to this ninety-year-old building.Thewhite walls are lined with reclaimed redwood wainscoting. A wood stove keeps everyone warm, and local art and beach finds decorate the walls. During the day, Breakers offers counter servicewhich can be maintained for your event, or the day-time countercan become your night-time bar. The large wooden tables and benches (church pews from Healdsburg rescued from destruction by the Breakers Café owners!) can be rearranged to your specifications, or can be cleared out entirely to allow for socializing and dancing. Wide French doors open out onto the wrap-around deck, and they can be easily opened to allow for an event that includes both the coziness of our interior and the gorgeous view from the deck.
The Breakers Café deck has ten tables and a counter area, and from the deck you gaze at the hillsides of Mount Tamalpais and can watch the bustle of Stinson along the main street. The deck has heat lamps and can be tented in inclement weather so you can enjoy the outdoors in comfort. Adjoining the deck is our oyster cookout station, where you can taste West Marin’s favorite snack: plump Tomales Bay oysters barbequed with hot garlic butter. Our spacious beer garden is hidden behind a gated wooden fence, providing the feeling of privacy in the middle of town. It is laid out with beds of kitchen vegetables, lawns, paved paths, and a lawn bowling court, as well as rustic benches and tables. Our large garden is the perfect place for guests to have a cocktail or glass of champagne before the main dining event takes place.
Breakers Café welcomes all inquiries, and we invite you to hang out with your friends at our funkyfamily-owned beach shack for your next event.
